In May of 2012, the Canadian research company Ipsos Reid did a survey about the quality of life in Nanaimo. The survey found that Nanaimo rated higher than many other cities in British Columbia. Those who live in Nanaimo feel they get a better bang for their buck in terms of tax dollars, and the cost of living is somewhat lower than it is in the cities of Vancouver or Victoria. Are you looking for more reasons to live in Nanaimo?
Housing prices are also lower than in the Capital Region. You can buy a nice little fixer-upper for just over $200,000, which is a great bargain when compared to what you would pay for property in Vancouver.
Small town charm
Living in Nanaimo is not just about saving money however. It might not be as traditionally ‘pretty’ as a city like Victoria, but that is part of its small-town charm.
There are about 100,000 people living in the vibrant city and surrounding areas of Nanaimo. There is never a shortage of things to do here and if you have ever visited Vancouver Island then you know how gorgeous the natural scenery is. A place known for its parks and other outdoor recreations.
Did you know there are more than 18 lakes in and around the city Nanaimo? Many of these lakes are quiet, with the feeling of being undiscovered. Other lakes are perfect spots for more adventurous exploring, with activities such as swimming, rowing and kayaking open as available options. While some lakes ban gas-powered watercraft, many others do not. The hiking and running trails along such lakes are also very popular and beloved, especially by enthusiastic dog-owners. One such popular destination is the 5.51 kilometer trail around Westwood Lake in Nanaimo.
Here are 2 of our favorite trails for cycling and hiking in Nanaimo:
- E&N Trail: This 8 kilometer trail is at the north end of Nanaimo and is paved. It’s a great spot for those just starting out as active cyclists.
- Morrell Nature Sanctuary: This is for those who want a bit more of a challenge. It is made up of 275 private acres and you can easily spend hours, or even the day there. There are even some wheelchair accessible trails.
