INSTALLING THE PERFECT WINE CELLAR
Wine cellars are a great addition to your home, but what are some key things to know before construction begins?
PICK THE LOCATION
Basements are perfect, but the reality is, not every home has one. Find a spot that has no direct sunlight, and where you can maintain a temperature of about 12 degrees Celcius. If your cellar is too warm the wine will age faster, and if it’s cooler, it will age slower.
The space doesn’t have to large – a 30 square foot room can hold approximately 200 to 250 bottles of wine – but you’ll want enough space for two or three people to be able to move around comfortably.
Controlling humidity is vital. 57 percent is ideal. More than 70 percent increases the risk of the cork getting moldy, while the cork can dry out and spoil the wine at less than 50 percent humidity.
INSTALL A WINE COOLING UNIT
In addition to cooling the room, these units can remove excess moisture and exhaust heat into an adjacent exhaust room (which must be large enough to absorb the heat).
You’ll want to show off your wine cellar, but be careful when choosing lighting. Regular light bulbs and halogen bulbs put out a lot of heat which can be too much for a wine cellar. Using LED bulbs in track lights, puck lights or strip lights is a better solution and can be a fun way to show off your collection.
PRODUCE A DOORWAY SEAL
Glass doors or walls are a great way to display your wine. Just keep in mind you must create a seal in the doorway so temperature and humidity can be easily maintained.
The actual construction of the room is an equally important part of the process. If you’re a do-it-yourself type, make sure you understand the physical requirements for how best to build the room – framing, insulation, venting etc. Or if you prefer someone else build the room for you, find a contractor experienced in this area of construction.
