Choosing the right Real Estate agent to represent you through the process of selling or buying your home is a daunting task. There are so many different REALTORS® working in Nanaimo, so many brokerages, and so many different business models. So how do you wade through all the choices to find someone who truly represents your values and has the skills to negotiate on your behalf? If the agent was recommended to you through a friend or acquaintance, ask them about their experience. Specifics are helpful. What did they like about the agent’s communication style? Were they able to answer calls or emails in a timely manner? Did they have another agent to back them up during times when they were unavailable?
Find Your Perfect Real Estate Agent
- Find out what their specializations are. Some agents only work in single family homes, while others prefer to stick to condos. Other real estate agents target their sales to particular areas that they know really well. Still other agents are jacks of all trades and don’t have certain areas or property types that they specialize in, instead specializing in unique marketing techniques or different sales approaches.
- Experience is important, and why should that change when buying or selling your home? Your real estate agent should have the experience necessary to help you reach your goals, as well as advise you on the current market and what you can expect to realistically get from your transaction(s). Ask your real estate agent if she or he has a mentor, or ongoing educational objectives. Does his or her brokerage continuing training to help their agents keep up with what’s going on in the market?
- Your REALTOR® should be able to keep you updated on how your deal is proceeding and what the next steps are. Talk to them about what your expectations are for communication timeframes, and what their standards are. Inquire about whether or not your agent uses the latest digital signature technologies, which help streamline the process by allowing you to sign documents straight from your phone or computer.
- If you prefer a very formal, businesslike style and your agent is more casual, chances are you won’t enjoy your experience. Likewise, if you prefer an informal approach, but your real estate agent is all business, you likely won’t have a very good relationship. This is something you’ll find quite easy to determine when you meet with an agent for the first time. If your agent is tight-lipped when you crack a joke or, conversely, makes more jokes than you’re comfortable with, you know it’s time to interview someone else.
Trust Your Intuition
When all is said and done, you base your decision to list or buy with a real estate agent on trust. The way the agent presents her or himself, their manner of speech, and the courtesy they show you are how you’ll ultimately make your decision.
